Veteran Onyango Saves the Day as Sundowns Triumph Without Williams

Veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango proved once again why he remains a crucial asset for Mamelodi Sundowns, stepping in to deliver a commanding performance as the Brazilians secured a hard-fought victory over Stellenbosch.

Iqraam Rayners netted the only goal of the game in the 18th minute off Kobamelo Kodisang’s assist at Danie Craven Stadium.

With first-choice keeper Ronwen Williams absent, still reveling in his recent CAF accolades, Onyango took center stage and reminded fans of his class.
The encounter was a closely contested affair, with Stellenbosch threatening to disrupt Sundowns’ dominant league campaign.

The Brazilians have not lost a league game since their 1-0 defeat away to Polokwane in October and Stellenbosch proved tricky but Onyango was equal to the challenge pulling off a couple of crucial saves putting up a performance better than any other player on the pitch on the day.

However, Onyango’s leadership at the back ensured that Sundowns maintained their composure, ultimately sealing the three points that solidify their lead at the top of the table.

Williams, recently named the CAF Best Goalkeeper and Best Interclub Player of the Year, was unavailable as he celebrated his historic achievements.

Despite not being included in the CAF Team of the Year, Williams’ stellar contributions throughout the year remain undeniable, and Sundowns have reaped the benefits of having two world-class goalkeepers in their ranks.

Onyango’s display not only showcased his experience but also reinforced Sundowns’ enviable squad depth.

With crucial matches ahead in both domestic and continental competitions, Sundowns fans can take comfort in knowing they are in safe hands, whether it’s Onyango or Williams between the posts.

As Sundowns continue their quest for dominance, the blend of seasoned veterans like Onyango and younger stars like Williams illustrates why they remain the benchmark for South African football.

Up Next

The Brazilians shift focus to their upcoming fixture visiting AmZulu on December 24, aiming to maintain their unrelenting momentum at the top of the standings where they lead with 24 points after nine games.

Stellenbosch, on the other hand, will seek to regroup and bounce back in their next outing away to SuperSport.
