Kawempe Muslim Reclaim Top Spot Ahead of Kampala Queens Clash

Kawempe Muslim Ladies Football Club reclaimed the top spot of the Finance Trust Bank FUFA Women Super League with a commanding 3-1 victory over Tooro Queens on Sunday at the Kawempe Muslim grounds.

The win sets up a high-stakes final first-round clash against bitter rivals Kampala Queens on Saturday, December 28, 2024.

Kampala Queens had temporarily overtaken Kawempe at the summit following their 3-0 triumph over Olila High School WFC on Saturday.

That victory, courtesy of goals from Anitah Namata, Zaina Nandede, and Catherine Nagadya, propelled Kampala Queens to 22 points, one ahead of Kawempe at the time.

For Kawempe, bouncing back was essential after dropping points in a 0-0 draw against She Corporate on December 14, and they did just that.

The team delivered an electric performance against Tooro Queens, starting with a 17th-minute goal from Samalie Nakacwa, who capitalised on a well-placed cross.

Just three minutes later, Agnes Nabukenya doubled the lead, scoring her sixth goal of the season to secure her place as the league’s second-highest scorer, behind Lady Doves’ Resty Kobusobozi, who has nine goals.

Hadijjah Nandago then sealed the win in the 60th minute with a clinical finish, ensuring Kawempe took a decisive 3-0 lead.

Tooro Queens managed to pull one back in the 78th minute through Sharon Nabbowa, who took advantage of defensive adjustments made after Kawempe substituted Kulusum Namutebi.

Kawempe Muslim head coach Ayub Khalifah reflected on the match and their preparations for the upcoming game against Kampala Queens, saying that the team of ready for the challenge.

“We organised our scoring area well, but the substitution of Kurusum Namutebi, who was on a yellow card, cost us a goal,” he noted.

“The Christmas break is tricky because players will be with their families, but we are ready for the challenge.”

The result means that Tooro Queens conclude the first round with just five points from 11 games, leaving them perilously close to the relegation zone.

On the other hand, Kawempe Muslim now sit at the top of the table with 24 points, two ahead of Kampala Queens who are in second place.

The upcoming clash between the two promises to be a mouthwatering clash and a decisive battle for first-round supremacy.

The game will be played at Kawempe Muslim grounds on December 28, with both teams looking to secure a psychological edge heading into the second round.

On the same day, another high-stakes encounter will be played between Uganda Martyrs Lubaga WFC and Olila High School WFC.

Uganda Martyrs, who sit in ninth place with 10 points, will be aiming to move further away from the drop zone, as a win will take them to 7th or 8th place.

Olila on the other hand, currently in 11th place with just five points, will have an opportunity to move out of the relegation zone with a win.
