Kampala Queens have ascended to the summit of the Finance Trust Bank Women Super League standings for the first time this season.
This was after a commanding 4-1 victory over rivals Kawempe Muslim Ladies on Saturday morning at the Valley in Kawempe.
How It Unfolded
The 2022/23 champions made their intentions clear early, with Shamusa Najjuma giving the visitors a 12th-minute lead.
However, Kawempe’s Shadia Nabirye leveled the score in the 24th minute, sparking hope for the hosts.
Just two minutes later, Najjuma struck again, completing her brace to restore Kampala Queens’ lead in the 26th minute.
Asia Nakibuuka added a third goal in the 33rd minute, giving Asefa Firew Hailegebreal’s side a comfortable 3-1 advantage going into halftime.
The second half remained goalless until the 85th minute when Kampala Queens captain Sharimah Nalugya made it 4-1 for the away side, allowing Kampala Queens to secure a crucial win over their previously unbeaten rivals.
The Standings Shift
The victory sees Kampala Queens leapfrog Kawempe Muslim Ladies to claim the top spot in the standings with 25 points from 11 games.
Kawempe, now in second place with 24 points, also from 11 games, suffered their first loss of the season, ending their unbeaten run.
Kampala Queens, on the other hand, remain unbeaten.
What’s Next?
The league will take a month-long break, resuming on February 1, 2025.
Kawempe will visit Makerere University in their next fixture, while Kampala Queens will host Uganda Martyrs the following day.
This triumph marks another milestone for the Queens of Soccer as they continue their pursuit of reclaiming the league title.
