The African Nations Championship (CHAN) is a football tournament that features African national teams composed exclusively of players active in their respective domestic leagues.
The upcoming 2024 edition is scheduled to take place from February 1 to 28, 2025, and will be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
Since its inception in 2009, five nations have claimed the title, with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) and Morocco each securing two championships, making them the most successful teams in the tournament’s history.
2009 – DR Congo
The first-ever CHAN, hosted by Ivory Coast witnessed the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) claim the inaugural title.
Led by coach Santos Muntubile, DR Congo’s journey culminated in a dominant 2–0 victory over Ghana in the final, setting the standard for future competitions.
The win highlighted the strength of DR Congo’s domestic league and their ability to translate that into international success.
2011 – Tunisia
In 2011, the second edition unfolded in Sudan, where Tunisia emerged as champions.
The North Africans dazzled throughout the tournament, with their structured gameplay and attacking prowess on full display in the final against Angola, which they won 3–0.
2014 – Libya
The 2014 tournament in South Africa brought a fairytale ending for Libya.
Despite not being among the pre-tournament favorites, the Libyans showcased resilience and tactical discipline.
In a tense final against 2009 finalists Ghana, the match ended goalless, pushing the contest into a nerve-wracking penalty shootout.
Libya triumphed 4–3, marking their first major football title in history.
2016 – DR Congo
DR Congo returned to glory in 2016 during the tournament hosted by Rwanda. The team demonstrated their dominance once again, defeating Mali 3–0 in a clinical final.
This victory made DR Congo the first nation to win the CHAN title twice, further underlining their strong domestic league talent.
2018 – Morocco
The 2018 edition, hosted by Morocco, saw the tournament’s most dominant campaign yet.
Playing in front of passionate home crowds, Morocco stormed to the title, culminating in a stunning 4–0 win over Nigeria in the final.
Their dynamic and attacking style of play captured the imagination of fans and brought them their first CHAN title.
2020 – Morocco
Two years later, Morocco repeated their success in Cameroon during the 2020 edition, becoming the first nation to win consecutive CHAN titles.
In the final, they outclassed Mali with a 2–0 victory, showcasing their consistency and superior tactical depth.
2022 – Senegal
The most recent tournament in 2022, hosted by Algeria, crowned a new champion.
Senegal, who were from from their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations truimph, added the CHAN title to their accolades.
The tightly contested final against hosts Algeria saw Senegal hold their nerve to win 5–4 in a dramatic penalty shootout after a goalless draw, marking their first-ever CHAN triumph.
