The 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), has received a major financial boost, with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announcing a significant increase in prize money.
The winner of the competition will now take home USD 3.5 million (approximately UGX 12.9 billion), a 75% increase from the previous edition.
Additionally, the total prize pool has been raised by 32%, amounting to USD 10.4 million (approximately UGX 38 billion).
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe emphasized the reason for the increase in the prize money, signalling the importance of CHAN in nurturing Africa-based football talent.
“The CHAN is an important Competition for the development and growth of Africa-based football players and talented young players and will contribute significantly to the global competitiveness of African football and CAF Competitions.” Mostepe said.
He further highlighted that the increased financial incentives aim to attract more sponsors, partners, and fans while further investing in the growth of football on the continent.
The CHAN tournament is exclusive to players competing in their domestic leagues, offering a unique platform to showcase local talent and strengthen national leagues.
The 2024 edition, set to be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania marks the first time the tournament will be co-hosted by three nations, and will run from February 1 to February 28, 2025.
It will feature 19 teams, including defending champions Senegal, who will face stiff competition from other qualified nations such as the co-hosts, Morocco, DR Congo and Nigeria.
