The stage is set for the 2025 Masaza Cup, Buganda Kingdom’s celebrated football tournament, with the competition officially scheduled to commence on Saturday, July 5.
This announcement was made by Buganda’s Minister of Youth, Sports and Arts, Robert Sserwanga, during the unveiling of the Kingdom’s Sports Activity calendar at Bulange Mengo yesterday.
The tournament will kick off with a launch event on Wednesday, July 2, ahead of the opening match.
For over four months, 18 teams representing the traditional counties (Masaza) of Buganda will battle for glory in a home-and-away format, culminating in a one-legged final on Saturday, November 1.
Reigning champions Buddu will begin their title defense with high expectations after their hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kyaggwe in last year’s final at Namboole.
Mike Walaga’s crucial goal secured Buddu their third title, adding to their 2022 and 2016 triumphs.
However, the competition promises to be intense, with the Masaza Cup consistently producing new champions, as four different teams have claimed the title over the past five years.
Record champions Gomba, with five titles to their name, will be eager to reclaim their dominance after losing the 2023 final to Bulemeezi.
Speaking of Bulemeezi, it will also be a strong contender, together with Busiro and Mawokota, given their rich histories in the competition.
Since its inception in 2004, the Masaza Cup has grown to become a cultural and sporting cornerstone for the Buganda Kingdom.
More than just a football competition, it fosters community unity, promotes young talent, and celebrates Buganda’s rich heritage.
The tournament has nurtured exceptional football talent, producing players who have gone on to represent Uganda with distinction on both national and international stages.
Teams are named after their respective counties, creating a deep sense of pride and identity among supporters.
The tournament’s format includes group stages, knockout rounds, and a grand final to determine the champion.
