CHAN 2024: Who Joins Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya?

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the postponement of the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, to August 2025.

In a statement released on Tuesday evening, CAF cited the need for additional time to complete the construction and upgrading of stadiums, training facilities, hotels, hospitals, and other infrastructure required to meet the standards necessary for hosting the tournament.

CAF officials, including technical and infrastructure experts stationed in the host nations, acknowledged significant progress made by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda in preparation for CHAN.

However, the experts advised that extending the timeline would allow the completion of these essential facilities to ensure a successful tournament.

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe commended the efforts of the three host nations and their respective leaders—President William Ruto of Kenya, President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, and President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda—for their dedication to the project.

“I am impressed with the ongoing construction and renovations of the football infrastructure and facilities in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. I am confident that the stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other infrastructure will meet CAF standards for hosting a very successful CHAN in August 2025,” Dr. Motsepe stated.

Despite the postponement, preparations remain in full swing. The official draw for CHAN 2024 is still scheduled to take place in Nairobi on January 15, 2025, at 8:00 PM local time.

CAF has yet to announce the exact start date of the rescheduled tournament in August 2025 but has assured fans that updates will be provided in due course.

The three East African nations are continuing their work to ensure a world-class event that will showcase the best of African football. The additional time is expected to guarantee that the infrastructure meets CAF’s standards, providing an exceptional experience for players, officials, and fans alike.
