Kipchoge Confirms London Marathon Appearance, Gives Update on Retirement

Kenyan Athlete Eliud Kipchoge, widely considered the greatest male marathon runner of all time, has confirmed his participation in the upcoming London Marathon on April 27th, dismissing speculation that it will be his final race.

The Kenyan legend, a two-time Olympic champion and a four-time London Marathon winner, faced questions about his future after failing to finish the marathon at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Kipchoge stated, “No, this will not be my farewell race. I will speak more about my future after the London Marathon.”

He emphasized his focus on training, stating, “I’m purely focused on fitness and ensuring my muscles are ready for the London streets.”

When pressed further about retirement, Kipchoge offered a unique perspective, saying, “When you convince me that the world has become a running world, I will retire. When you have four billion people running every day, I will retire.”

The London Marathon field will be a competitive one, featuring, Ugandan Olympic Bronze Medalist Jacob Kiplimo, 2024 Olympic champion Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia and defending London champion Alexander Mutiso Munyao of Kenya.

Kipchoge previously made history in 2019 by running a marathon in under two hours, although the record was not officially recognized due to the unique conditions of the event.

The current official world record of 2 hours and 35 seconds was set by fellow Kenyan Kelvin Kiptum in 2023.
