Mahmoud Gomda, Founder and CEO of Mafro Sports, joined the Sport This Evening team on Thursday to discuss the brand’s rapid growth across Africa and its commitment to sports development.
Gomda’s visit to Uganda marked the start of Mafro’s Africa Tour, which also includes stops in Kenya and Zambia.
His Uganda visit will conclude on Saturday, January 18, before he proceedes to Kenya, where he will stay until January 23, followed by Zambia until January 29.
Based in Singapore, Mafro Sports provides kits for clubs across various sports disciplines, establishing a strong footprint in African sports.
In Uganda, its partners include Uganda Premier League clubs KCCA and Lugazi, as well as Rugby Premiership defending champions Heathens and Kyadondo-based Buffaloes.
Speaking during the interview, Gomda emphasized the brand’s long-term plans in Uganda, which were temporarily hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We have big plans for Uganda, but the COVID-19 pandemic slowed us down a bit. The plan is to set up an office permanently in Uganda and get more partners,” Gomda said.
Reflecting on Mafro’s grassroots initiatives, Gomda highlighted the success of last year’s Mafro Rugby Sevens for children and unveiled plans to expand the tournament.
“This year, the plan is to have a category for adults too. We even want to invite some international teams to come to Uganda and take part in the tournament,” he revealed.
Gomda also commended the Mafro Uganda team for their dedication to expanding the brand’s reach and announced that Mafro is making strides in other African markets, such as Kenya and Zambia.
“In Zambia, we picked up two clubs. We are also expanding our presence in Kenya. The overall goal is to set up a Mafro network of clubs, through which we can organize, for example, pre-season tournaments and the like,” Gomda added.
With its growing presence in Africa and ambitious plans for sports development, Mafro Sports continues to solidify its role as a key player in the continent’s sports landscape.
