Over the years, football players have dreamed of reaching the professional ranks, where they gain exposure, financial benefits, and new challenges.
It was no different for Fatumah Nakasumba, who landed an opportunity 6,256 kilometers away from Kampala to join Waling Municipality Women Football Club, a team competing in the ANFA Women’s League in Nepal.
Joining on a four-month contract as a free agent, Nakasumba featured in seven games and registered one assist during her stint.
Reflecting on her experience in Nepal, she shared several important lessons.
“Ugandans are really talented,” she said before adding, “but we lack the necessary facilities to nurture our potential. One thing I noticed in Nepal is that they have better training grounds and resources to support players. If we had the same infrastructure here in Uganda, our football talent would develop much faster, and we could compete on a higher level globally.”
She also highlighted the organizational differences she observed, noting, “In Nepal, I learned that football doesn’t just happen on the pitch. There are so many processes and activities done behind the scenes—like strategic planning, proper player welfare management, and community engagement—that contribute to the team’s success,” she said.
“These are areas we need to work on back home to improve the quality and professionalism of our teams,” she added.
Nakasumba’s return to Uganda stirred speculation when a photo circulated on social media showing her posing with a Wakiso Hill WFC jersey at Entebbe International Airport.
Addressing the rumors, she clarified, “That photo was simply a gesture of hospitality. They welcomed me warmly, which I deeply appreciated, but I am not signed to them or any other team at the moment. I’m still a free agent and open to opportunities, both locally and internationally.”
When asked about her future plans, the talented defender expressed her optimism about returning to Nepal.
“I’m very hopeful about going back to Nepal because the team I played for has shown interest in having me again. My time there was a great experience, and I believe I still have more to contribute. At the same time, I am open to any offers that come my way, as long as they help me grow and advance my career,” she said confidently.
Waling Municipality Women Football Club was also home to three other Ugandan players Namuddu Viola, Nantongo Cissy, and Nassali Jackie.
