Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has publicly acknowledged his side’s need for reinforcements in the January transfer window, citing a lack of goals and options within the squad.
This comes amidst a concerning injury crisis that has seen key players Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus sidelined for extended periods.
Saka, a crucial attacking force, is expected to be out until late March with a hamstring injury, while Jesus faces a longer-term absence.
These injuries, coupled with recent disappointing results, including a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup and an early FA Cup exit, have intensified calls for the club to bolster its attacking options.
“My opinion is clear,” Arteta stated during a press conference ahead of Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Wolves. “We lost two very important players in Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus. We lack goals, we lack people, and we lack options. It’s clear.”
He further emphasized the need for the right additions, stating, “If we can get the right player, that’s why we are actively looking at it (the market). Any player? No. Someone who makes us better. Ideally, we need some help because we were very short already, and we’re even shorter now, but the team copes with that.”
While the transfer window remains open, Arteta confirmed that the club is actively exploring potential targets. However, he stressed that any signings must be of a high quality and capable of significantly improving the team.
On the injury front, there is some positive news. Myles Lewis-Skelly, who sustained a minor knee injury in the recent draw against Aston Villa, is being assessed.
Arteta indicated that a decision on his availability for the Wolves match will be made after further evaluation.
Meanwhile, William Saliba, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury, is nearing a return.
While he may not be ready for the Wolves game, Arteta expects him to be available for selection next week.
Despite the challenges, Arteta remains confident that his team can navigate this difficult period. He highlighted the team’s resilience in coping with the current circumstances.
