When it comes to Red Bulls II, Ibrahim Sekagya’s influence cannot be overstated. The former Uganda Cranes captain, who also had a distinguished playing career in Europe and South America, has been integral to the club since its inception in 2015.
Sekagya joined the coaching staff as an assistant when the team was launched on March 2, 2015, and has since risen to the role of Head Coach, a position he officially assumed on February 6, 2023, after a stint as Interim Head Coach in 2022.
Hailing from Kampala, Uganda, Sekagya brought years of leadership and experience to the Red Bulls organization.
As a player, he captained Uganda’s national team and enjoyed success at clubs such as Kampala Capital City Authority FC (KCCA) in Uganda, Arsenal Sarandí in Argentina, and Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, where he won three Austrian Bundesliga titles and the 2012 Austrian Cup.
He later joined the New York Red Bulls in 2013, helping them win the MLS Supporters’ Shield that year.
Sekagya transitioned seamlessly into coaching and was part of the technical staff that guided Red Bulls II to the 2016 USL Championship title.
As Head Coach, he has overseen 73 matches and led the team to its first winning season since 2019, culminating in a historic first playoff appearance and win in MLS NEXT Pro in 2023.
Reflecting on his coaching journey, Sekagya describes Red Bulls II as “a second family” and takes pride in helping young players reach their potential.
“Coaching and developing young talent is incredibly rewarding. Seeing their growth and watching them achieve their goals is an honor,” he said.
His favorite moment with the club remains the 2016 USL Championship victory under then-coach John Wolyniec.
“That moment was filled with pride and joy. It was an overwhelming sense of accomplishment for everyone involved,” Sekagya recalled.
Being appointed Head Coach in 2023 marked a significant milestone for Sekagya.
“It was a rewarding experience that made me feel recognized for my hard work. It also came with new responsibilities, but I stayed committed to the team’s success,” he noted.
The club’s first playoff win in MLS NEXT Pro was another proud achievement.
“It was a milestone that showcased our hard work and gave young players exposure to move closer to the first team. It’s a testament to our teamwork and dedication,” he said.
As the 2025 season approaches, Sekagya is optimistic about building on the team’s success.
“I’m excited to work with returning players and new talent. Every season brings challenges and opportunities, and I can’t wait to see how we grow as a team,” he concluded.
