Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes the intense scrutiny surrounding Marcus Rashford has contributed to the forward’s desire to leave Old Trafford.
Rashford publicly declared his intention to seek a new challenge in December, with Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, and Napoli linked with loan moves.
The 27-year-old has not featured for the club since making his intentions known.
Speaking to Mail Sport, Ferdinand acknowledged the pressure that comes with being a Manchester United player, particularly as a prominent figure.
“Manchester United, and the people around Marcus, need to ensure he leaves in the best mental and physical state,” Ferdinand said. “He’s been over-scrutinized for years, which is part and parcel of being a United player, especially when you’re one of the faces of the club.”
Ferdinand emphasized that only Rashford can ultimately decide what’s best for his career, whether it’s staying at United or seeking a new challenge.
However, he cautioned that the decision will likely involve a degree of uncertainty.
New manager Ruben Amorim has faced early challenges, with the team currently languishing in 13th place in the Premier League.
Ferdinand believes that short-term pain may be necessary for long-term success, but he expressed reservations about Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation.
“I don’t mind 3-4-3 as long as you don’t play five at the back,” Ferdinand stated. “If you get pinned back, you become vulnerable and give the opposition more opportunities.”
