Uganda Cranes playmaker Allan Okello has described Group C of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 as “good but tricky,” emphasizing the need for thorough preparation to compete against some of the continent’s best teams.
Speaking about the draw, which pits Uganda against Nigeria, Tunisia, and Tanzania, Okello acknowledged the challenge ahead while expressing optimism about the Cranes’ potential.
“The group is good but tricky. We are going to face some of the best teams on the continent as well as our neighbours in the East African derby,” Okello said.
The 24-year-old, who has emerged as one of Uganda’s most dependable players despite his young age, highlighted the importance of effort and unity within the squad.
“We the players need to prepare well and give our best during the tournament. I think we can do well if we do our best,” he added.
Okello’s leadership qualities have been evident, particularly as captain of the locally-based squad competing in the African Nations Championship (CHAN).
His experience, coupled with his attacking prowess, has been crucial for Uganda in their journey to the AFCON finals.
The midfielder played a pivotal role in the qualifiers, delivering key assists against South Sudan, Congo, and South Africa.
Since his debut for the national team in 2019, Okello’s creativity and vision in the midfield will be vital for Uganda’s chances in Morocco.
As one of the more experienced players in the squad, he is expected to inspire the younger players and provide stability in high-pressure situations.
The East African derby against Tanzania on December 27 is a match Okello and his teammates are particularly looking forward to, given its significance for regional bragging rights.
However, the Cranes must also navigate tough matches against AFCON powerhouses Tunisia and Nigeria to stand a chance of advancing to the knockout stages.
