Following the commissioning of Akii-Bua Olympic Multipurpose stadium construction by President Museveni on Wednesday, the Minister of State for Sports Hon. Peter Ogwang has warned contractors SAMCO National Construction Company against shoddy work.
During a stakeholders meeting held at the site, Ogwang noted that the stadium must be delivered fully in conformity to the national and international standards.
“The issue of wasting time and playing around with this project must not be seen here. The contractor must ensure the project is completed in time within 20 months as stipulated in the contract”, Ogwang noted, before warning all involved stakeholders against involving themselves in corruption tendencies.
“I will not see any area of corruption in this project. Nobody should ask for any money from the contractor. If anybody asks for any money from you (contractor), please let me informed”, the Minister remarked before tasking the City Town Clerk Lira, Vincent Okurut to designate a specific technical officer to coordinate all matters of Akii-Bua stadium works till project handover.
The minister called on all stakeholders and government agencies like National Water, UMEME, Environment, immigration among others to ensure all essential services are in place.
“I don’t want to hear of any mistakes in this project. Some opposition leaders in Lango have been saying “no Akii-Bua, no vote,” now that Akii-Bua is here, what will they say again?” Ogwang asked.
The Minister for Health, also the area Woman MP Lira City, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng asked all stakeholders to play their roles for the smooth running of the Akii-Bua project as any delays will be taken as sabotage.
“You must deliver to expectations. I want to thank the President and the First Lady, also the minister of education and sports, for fulfilling their promise to the people of Lango”, Aceng noted.
