President Yoweri Museveni has confirmed that the government will upgrade Gulu Airport to international standards in preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where Akii Bua Olympic Stadium has been earmarked as one of Uganda’s host venues.
Speaking at the foundation-laying ceremony for the Akii Bua Stadium in Lira City on Wednesday, Museveni emphasized the importance of having modern sports infrastructure and efficient transportation networks to ensure a successful tournament.
“Since we have committed ourselves as East Africa to host AFCON in 2027, we shall ensure the three stadia—Mandela Stadium Namboole, Hoima Stadium, and Akii Bua Olympic Stadium—are in place, in time,” he said.
“An airport will be constructed in Gulu City alongside a shorter route (Aboke–Bobi) to Lira to ease transportation during AFCON 2027,” he added.
Gulu International Airport, located in northern Uganda, is set to undergo significant upgrades to meet international standards and serve as a key gateway for AFCON 2027.
The planned improvements include:
- A new 3,100-meter by 60-meter runway to accommodate larger aircraft.
- A new passenger terminal with modern facilities, lighting, and parking.
- A cargo complex to support freight transport.
- A control tower with advanced air navigation systems.
- New taxiways and an apron for aircraft movement.
- Fire and rescue infrastructure for emergency response.
- New access roads and a car park to enhance connectivity.
The upgrade will allow Gulu Airport to handle international flights, including those of national teams, officials, and fans traveling for AFCON matches.
According to Article 16.14 of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) AFCON regulations, any AFCON host city more than 200 km from the capital must have an operational airport to facilitate air travel for visiting teams.
With Hoima International Airport supporting Hoima Stadium and Entebbe International Airport supporting Mandela National Stadium, Gulu International Airport will play a crucial role in hosting matches at Akii Bua Stadium.
Despite Museveni’s commitment to upgrading Gulu Airport, leaders from the Lango Sub-Region urged the government to consider constructing an international airport in Lira.
Hon. Judith Alyek, Chairperson of the Lango Parliamentary Group, presented the request on behalf of the region’s lawmakers, arguing that an international airport in Anai, Lira City West Division would ease congestion at Entebbe Airport and boost economic opportunities in Northern Uganda.
With stadium construction underway and airport upgrades planned, Uganda’s preparations for hosting AFCON alongside Kenya and Tanzania are gaining momentum.
