Steven Gerrard and Al Ettifaq Part Ways by Mutual Agreement

Former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard’s tenure as head coach of Saudi Pro League club Al Ettifaq has come to an end by mutual agreement.

The announcement, made earlier today, brings to a close a period that began in the summer of 2023 and saw Gerrard sign a contract extension just a year ago, committing him to the club until 2027.

Despite the initial optimism surrounding Gerrard’s arrival, Al Ettifaq has struggled to find consistency. Currently sitting 12th in the 18-team league, the team has suffered eight defeats in their 17 matches this season.

This disappointing run of form ultimately led to the decision for both Gerrard and the club to part ways.

In a statement released following the announcement, Gerrard expressed his gratitude to the club, players, fans, and staff for their support during his time in Saudi Arabia.

“From the first day I was warmly welcomed and I have enjoyed the chance to work in a new country with a different culture,” Gerrard stated.

He emphasized the positive personal and family experience he gained from the opportunity, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of football and the fact that sometimes, “things don’t go the way we want.”

Gerrard concluded his statement by expressing his respect for the club and the country, wishing Al Ettifaq success for the remainder of the season.

Al Ettifaq president Samer Al Mishal also released a statement thanking Gerrard for his dedication and hard work.

Al Mishal acknowledged that while things didn’t go as planned, Gerrard had laid “firm foundations” that would contribute to the club’s future success. He emphasized the mutual respect that underpinned the decision, stating that it was in the best interest of both Gerrard and the club.

“He changed the club for the better, and that will never be forgotten,” Al Mishal affirmed.

Gerrard’s departure raises questions about his future coaching career and the direction Al Ettifaq will take in their search for a new manager. The Saudi Pro League continues to attract high-profile names, and the coming weeks will be closely watched to see who Al Ettifaq appoints to lead the team forward.
