Uganda Gazelles Confident as They Begin AfroBasket Qualification Quest

The Uganda Gazelles touched down in Cairo, Egypt, on Friday for the FIBA Zone V Qualifiers, carrying a strong sense of purpose and belief.

Speaking after their final training session in Uganda, team captain Jane Asinde emphasized the squad’s confidence and readiness for the challenge ahead.

Asinde highlighted the impact of the young players who joined the team during camp, praising their fearless approach.

“The young girls really impacted us in the training camp we had. They didn’t fear anybody. They are very confident,” she said.

With a blend of experienced players and promising new talent, the Gazelles are aiming to make a statement in the tournament.

The primary goal for the team remains clear—securing a spot in the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket.

Asinde made it clear that qualification is the only thing on their minds.

“We go into this tournament with the sole aim to qualify. That’s the number one goal we have set as the Gazelles,” she stated.

With final preparations complete, the Gazelles now shift focus to their opening game, where they will test their skills against some of the region’s top teams.

The squad, led by head coach Nicholas Natuhereza, will rely on their well-structured training and recent scouting efforts to navigate the competition successfully.

Uganda faces stiff opposition from regional basketball powerhouses such as Kenya and Rwanda, but the team remains confident in their abilities.

The games will start on Monday 3rd February and will run until February 8th.
