Amus College edged closer to the summit of the Finance Trust Bank Women’s Super League after securing a vital 1-0 victory over Wakiso Hill on Saturday at Kitende.
A second-half goal from Edina Wanda sealed all three points for Amus, keeping them within striking distance of table leaders Kampala Queens.
With the win, Amus moved to 24 points, just four behind Kampala Queens (28) and one behind reigning champions Kawempe Muslim (25), all having played 12 matches.
Wakiso Hill started strongly, dominating possession and pressing for an early lead.
Their best opportunity came in the 42nd minute when Shafiga Tamisi weaved through two defenders and unleashed a powerful shot, but her effort sailed inches over the crossbar.
Amus College gradually took control in the second half, and their breakthrough came in the 64th minute, when Wanda raced past a defender before rifling the ball past the goalkeeper.
Five minutes before full-time, Shalyne Opisa nearly doubled the advantage with a curling effort that went just wide, but Amus held firm to claim all three points.
Despite the loss, Wakiso Hill’s central defender Judith Mawuwa was named Player of the Match for her resolute defensive display.
However, Wakiso Hill remain at the bottom of the table with just five points from 12 matches and is still searching for its first win of the season.
Elsewhere, She Corporate began the second round with a 1-0 victory over Lady Doves in Jinja on Sunday.
Jesca Namanda’s stunning 37th-minute strike was the difference, as goalkeeper Molly Nava made crucial saves to preserve the win.
The result keeps She Corporate in eighth place with 14 points, just three behind the top five, while Lady Doves remain fourth with 20 points.
In another fixture, She Maroons and Olila High School played out a goalless draw, marking Olila’s sixth draw of the season. However, the point lifted them out of the relegation zone.
Meanwhile, Kawempe Muslim were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw against Makerere University, allowing Kampala Queens to extend their lead at the top with a 1-0 win over Uganda Martyrs.
Tooro Queens also grabbed a 2-1 victory over Rines SS.
Looking ahead, Amus College will host Rines SS on Sunday, February 9, while Wakiso Hill will travel to face Lady Doves on the same day, as the battle for survival and the title race continue to intensify.
