Uganda will be among the eight African nations competing in the inaugural WBC/ABU Amateur Boxing Championship, set to take place in Lagos, Nigeria, from February 6 to 8.
The championship, organized by Nigerian boxing promotion outfit YUCATECO, will serve as a qualifier for the WBC Amateur Boxing World Cup in Mexico later this year.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lagos, YUCATECO CEO Imonlei Yakubu Imadu confirmed that Uganda will join Kenya, Ghana, Togo, Benin Republic, Senegal, Cameroon, and host nation Nigeria in the tournament, which will be held at the newly constructed Gymnasium at Teslim Balogun Stadium.
The event, sanctioned by the African Boxing Union (ABU), will feature knockout-style competition across multiple male and female weight categories.
Imadu expressed excitement about the championship, emphasizing its significance in developing amateur boxing across Africa.
“This groundbreaking event will give African boxers the opportunity to be ranked by both the WBC and ABU,” he said, calling for more corporate support to boost grassroots boxing.
Uganda’s participation in the championship presents an opportunity for its amateur boxers to compete on a continental stage and secure spots for the WBC Amateur Boxing World Cup.
With the tournament expected to draw top talents from across Africa, Uganda’s fighters will aim to make an impact and enhance their international standing.
The championship is part of YUCATECO’s broader mission to reposition boxing in Africa, following the success of its first-ever boxing league championship in Edo State, Nigeria, last year.
