Ugandans put on an impressive display at the 2025 WBC-ABU Amateur Boxing Championship, clinching five medals at the event held at Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos, Nigeria.
The team’s haul of three silver and two bronze medals made Uganda the only country outside of Nigeria to feature prominently on the medal table.
Among the standout performances was lightweight boxer Shakur Mugambe (60kg), who fought his way to the final but lost via unanimous decision to Nigeria’s Rilwan Salawu.
Despite the defeat, Mugambe’s silver medal secured him a spot at the prestigious WBC World Championship in Mexico, marking a major milestone for Ugandan amateur boxing.
Uganda’s other silver medalists included Maduwa Brenda (51kg) who lost to Benin’s Pauline Assogba, and Muleme Katabula (64kg), both of whom showcased resilience and skill throughout the tournament.
Uganda also secured two bronze medals through Balyegesa Benon (56kg) and Isaac Ssenyange (75kg), rounding off an impressive outing in Lagos.
The team’s success in Nigeria underscores Uganda’s growing presence in African boxing, with their performances setting the stage for future international competition.
With Mugambe now set to represent Uganda at the WBC World Championship in Mexico, Uganda will look to build on this momentum as they continue their journey on the global stage.
