Tanzanian giants Simba SC are once again at a critical juncture in the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup, with history against them as they attempt to finally break their quarter-final jinx.

Despite their consistent presence in the knockout stages of continental competitions, the Wekundu wa Msimbazi have struggled to go beyond this round.

Uganda Cranes forward Steven Mukwala, who joined Simba to bolster their attack, is yet to record a goal contribution in the tournament.

While Simba have dominated domestically and finished atop Group A with 13 points, Mukwala’s influence in front of goal has been limited so far given he has only played a combined 113 minutes.

However, with the crucial quarter-final stage approaching, the Ugandan striker will be eager to step up and make his mark when it matters most.

Under the guidance of South African coach Fadlu Davids, Simba have displayed resilience and tactical discipline, but their biggest test now lies ahead.

The club has previously exited at the quarter-final stage in the CAF Champions League (2020/21, 2022/23, 2023/24) and the CAF Confederation Cup (2021/22), and fans will be hoping this season signals a turning point.

With the quarter-final draw set for Thursday, 20 February, Simba await their next opponent, knowing that a strong performance could finally propel them past their long-standing barrier.

Mukwala and his teammates will be under pressure to deliver, as expectations soar for the club to take the next step toward continental success.
