George Russell has declared his readiness to challenge for the 2025 Formula 1 World Championship, asserting that his experience and Mercedes’ proven ability to win races give him the confidence to seize the title.

This declaration comes as Russell prepares for his fourth season with the Silver Arrows, but his first without seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton as his teammate.

Hamilton’s high-profile move to Ferrari during the off-season has elevated Russell to the position of team leader.

Replacing Hamilton is 18-year-old Italian prodigy Kimi Antonelli, who joins Mercedes as the highly-touted rookie.

While Antonelli’s arrival adds a new dynamic to the team, Russell, now entering his seventh F1 season, is focused on his own championship aspirations.

“Yeah absolutely,” Russell affirmed to Sky Sports News when questioned about his title chances. “I feel ready, everybody in the team is so motivated. I feel these years have been trial and error, but every time we’ve had a chance to win, we’ve won.”

He emphasized this winning mentality as a key factor in his optimism for the upcoming season.

“That’s what gives me the optimism that if we do have the car, we can achieve it. We’re working as hard as we can for it to be this year, everybody is fully on board and it’s going to be an exciting season.”

Russell’s confidence isn’t unfounded. Despite a late-season incident with Max Verstappen in Qatar and a disqualification in Belgium, the 26-year-old Briton enjoyed a successful 2024 campaign, securing victories in Austria and Las Vegas and ultimately finishing ahead of Hamilton in the drivers’ championship standings.

The 2025 season presents a significant opportunity for Russell to solidify his position as a championship contender. With Hamilton’s departure, the spotlight firmly shines on Russell’s shoulders.

He will be expected to lead the team’s development efforts and maximize the car’s potential.

Mercedes will offer a glimpse of their 2025 challenger at the 10-team season launch event at The O2 Arena in London next Tuesday, where they will unveil their new livery.

The full car reveal is scheduled for Monday, February 24th, giving fans and rivals a closer look at the machine Russell hopes will propel him to championship glory.

The 2025 F1 season kicks off in Australia on March 16th, where Russell will begin his quest for the title.
