Express FC will be eager to kick off their second round of the Uganda Premier League on a winning note when they host BUL at Nakivubo Stadium today evening under the floodlights.

The Red Eagles have struggled in recent meetings with the Jinja-based side, failing to register a victory in their last four encounters.

Their last win over BUL came in the 2022/23 season when they completed a league double, winning 2-1 away before edging them 1-0 at home.

Express ended the first round in third place with 25 points, a position they attained after a disciplinary ruling saw KCCA deducted points for fielding an ineligible player.

A victory over BUL could move them closer to second-placed NEC, who are not in action until tomorrow.

Despite their strong position in the league standings, Express has had a turbulent campaign off the pitch, with reports of financial struggles affecting player morale.

However, captain Emmanuel Wasswa acknowledged that despite the struggles, the players are ready to salvage a result against BUL.

“We want to start the second round with three points and as players, we are ready,” said Express captain Emmanuel Wasswa.

Interim head coach Badru Kaddu, who took over from Baker Mbowa in October, will be keen to guide his side to a strong start in the second round.

BUL, currently ninth with 20 points, will be desperate to improve their standing after an inconsistent first round.

The side has proven to be a tough opponent for Express in recent seasons and remains unbeaten in their last four encounters in all competitions, winning twice and drawing twice.

Head coach Abbey Bogere Kikomeko will hope new signings Viane Ssekajugo and Karim Ndugwa provide the attacking spark BUL has lacked, with the team scoring just 13 goals in 15 games so far.

A win for BUL could see them leapfrog to sixth place if Maroons, who host Bright Stars in one of the early kick-offs, fail to win.

The Red Eagles will, however, be determined to snap their poor record against BUL and set the tone for the second round as they continue their push up the table.

Kickoff is set for 7 pm at the Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo.
