Kampani Eagles RFC will hold a memorial service on Saturday, February 15, 2025, to honor the late Kayondo Ronnie, who tragically passed away after sustaining an injury during a rugby match.
As a lasting tribute, the club has announced that Kayondo’s jersey number will be retired, ensuring his legacy lives on in Ugandan rugby.
The service will take place at Kitante Primary School, starting at 3:00 PM, with players, fans, and rugby officials expected to attend.
In a show of solidarity, attendees have been encouraged to wear rugby jerseys as they celebrate the life of the promising young athlete.
Kayondo, a key member of Kampani Eagles RFC, died on February 9, 2025, at Kampala Hospital after suffering an injury in a Nile Special Rugby Premiership match against Buffaloes Rugby Club at Kyadondo Rugby Club.
His funeral was held on February 11 at his ancestral home in Kaduggala-Mirembe, following a service and vigil at his family home in Nabbingo.
His passing deeply affected the rugby fraternity, prompting the Uganda Rugby Union (URU) to postpone all league matches for two weeks.
The retirement of his jersey number is a rare and significant gesture, symbolizing his impact on the club and the sport.
Teammates, coaches, and rugby fans will gather this weekend to reflect on Kayondo’s life and contributions to the game.
The memorial will serve as a moment of remembrance and unity, ensuring that his spirit remains part of Kampani Eagles RFC forever.
