Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is facing a severe injury crisis, with several key players sidelined for extended periods.
The latest blow comes with the news that forward Kai Havertz will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on a hamstring injury sustained during the team’s training camp in Dubai.
Havertz joins a growing list of absentees, including striker Gabriel Jesus, who is recovering from ACL surgery.
Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Ben White, and Takehiro Tomiyasu are also unavailable for Saturday’s crucial Premier League match against Leicester City.
Arteta expressed his frustration with the situation, attributing the spate of injuries to player overload.
“We’ve had players who are injured who’ve played 130 games in the last two seasons so it’s an accident waiting to happen when you continue to load, load and load,” he stated.
He emphasized the demanding schedule and the lack of time for adequate recovery, arguing that “the amount of muscle and tendon injuries is higher than ever so there’s a relationship.”
With his preferred forward line decimated, Arteta will have to rely on players like Raheem Sterling, Ethan Nwaneri, and Leandro Trossard to fill the gaps.
He highlighted the opportunity this presents for young players like 17-year-old Nwaneri, saying, “It’s a question of when. He has the right qualities, to play out wide or centrally. We must adapt to the strengths of our players.”
Despite the setbacks, Arteta remains focused on the Premier League title race. With Liverpool recently dropping points, Arsenal sits seven points behind the league leaders.
Arteta believes the upcoming fixtures will be crucial in determining the final standings.
“The next few weeks is critical, we need to see where we are after the international break in six or seven weeks,” he commented.
The Gunners’ resilience will be tested in the coming weeks as they navigate a challenging period with a depleted squad.
