UPL Preview: Villa Seek Redemption as Express Chase Historic Double in Kampala Derby

SC Villa and Express FC reignite their fierce rivalry this afternoon in the Uganda Premier League at Luzira Prisons Grounds, with both sides eager to claim their first victory of the second round.

The stakes are high, but for Express, history beckons as they aim to complete a league double over the Jogoos for the first time in over a decade.

Villa enters this clash under mounting pressure, having struggled to find consistency in a season where their title defense has already faded.

Sitting ninth on the table with 21 points, the defending champions trail league leaders Vipers by a massive 16 points, and their ambitions have now shifted to securing a respectable finish.

Head coach Morley Byekwaso remains under scrutiny, with fans yet to be convinced by his tenure after taking over from title-winning Serbian coach Dusan Stojanovic.

A disappointing 1-1 draw against Wakiso Giants in their last outing only added to the frustrations, and a loss in this derby would further intensify the spotlight on Byekwaso’s future.

Express, on the other hand, have been dealing with internal challenges, including reports of unpaid salaries, yet they have remained competitive.

Currently in third place with 25 points, the Red Eagles are 12 behind Vipers but remain in contention for a strong finish.

Their 2-0 defeat to BUL in the previous round halted momentum, but victory over their arch-rivals would reignite their push for the top positions.

Joseph Zziwa’s lone goal secured a 1-0 win in the reverse fixture at Nakivubo, and another triumph would see Express accomplish a feat they last achieved in the 2013/14 season—beating Villa home and away in the same campaign.

The Jogoos will welcome back Simon Kato Ssemayange from suspension, offering some stability in defense, but doubts remain over the fitness of Francis Onekalit and Elvis Ngonde.

Express will miss Sam Ssenyonjo, who was forced off against BUL, but the return of Rashid Kawawa could provide a much-needed boost in attack.

Recent history favours Villa, having won four of the last five meetings, but derbies are unpredictable, and Express will be eager to rewrite the script.

A win for the Jogoos could lift them into the top five if URA falters in their evening fixture against Maroons.

Meanwhile, Express could reduce the gap on second-placed NEC to just eight points with a victory.

With both sides desperate for a result, Luzira is set for a fiery contest that could shape the course of their respective seasons.
