The 6th edition of the Elite Games in Uganda marked a historic milestone with the debut of Rugby Sevens, a move that promises to propel the sport’s growth in the country.
The competition, held from February 14 to 16 at St. Joseph of Nazareth in Mpigi, featured two boys’ schools: Busoga College Mwiri from the Busoga Zone and London College of St. Lawrence.
The round-robin format saw Busoga College Mwiri dominate their opponents, winning all three of their matches. The results were as follows:
- Day One, Game 1: Busoga College Mwiri 40 – 10 London College of St. Lawrence
- Day One, Game 2: London College of St. Lawrence 10 – 22 Busoga College Mwiri
- Day Two: Busoga College Mwiri 21 – 14 London College Mwiri
Ikinyom Mario Prince of Busoga College Mwiri was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, an accolade that highlighted his exceptional performance throughout the event.
In the girls’ category, Nkoma SS from Mbale was declared the winner by default, as they were the only participating team.
Bithola Ocukune Francis, a member of the USSSA Executive Committee and rugby delegate, shared his vision for future editions, stressing the importance of early mobilization to generate interest and participation.
He emphasized that this debut marks just the beginning for Rugby Sevens in the Elite Games and looks forward to even bigger and more competitive events in the years to come.
This year’s championship was a great success, and Rugby Sevens’ introduction to the event signifies a new chapter for school sports in Uganda.
