Mamelodi Sundowns extended their lead at the top of the Premier Soccer League standings with a 3-1 comeback victory over Marumo Gallants on Wednesday evening.
However, the win was marred by a dramatic late sending-off of former Uganda Cranes captain Denis Onyango.
The experienced goalkeeper, who has been a key figure for the Brazilians, was shown two yellow cards in the closing moments of the match, leaving Sundowns to finish the game with ten men. With no substitutions left, defender Thapelo Morena had to step into goal for the final minutes.
Marumo Gallants had taken the lead in the first half through Junior Dion in the 37th minute, but Sundowns responded strongly after the break.
Marcelo Allende equalized six minutes into the second half before Lucas Ribeiro Costa put the visitors ahead in the 79th minute. Iqraam Rayners sealed the victory just three minutes later.
Onyango, who has enjoyed a decorated career with Sundowns, endured a frustrating night as he was first booked for time-wasting before receiving a second yellow for dissent.
His dismissal left Sundowns under pressure in the dying moments, but they held on to secure the three points.
The win sees Sundowns extend their lead over Orlando Pirates to 12 points in the PSL table, reinforcing their dominance in the title race. Meanwhile, Gallants remain in 14th place, continuing their struggle near the relegation zone.
With Onyango now set to serve a suspension, Sundowns will have to look to Ronwen Williams or their backup goalkeepers when they face TS Galaxy on Saturday, February 22.
Gallants, on the other hand, will aim to bounce back when they take on Polokwane City on Sunday, February 23.
