Fresh off a commanding 2-0 victory over rivals KCCA in the Uganda Premier League, Vipers SC are gearing up for another high-stakes encounter as they host Mbarara City in the Round of 32 of the Stanbic Uganda Cup.
The match is scheduled for 7 pm at St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, this Thursday, February 20, 2025.
The Venoms, buoyed by their recent league success, are looking to carry their winning momentum into the knockout tournament.
Goals from Yunus Sentamu and Allan Okello sealed their triumph over KCCA, and the duo will be key figures as Vipers aim to advance in the Uganda Cup.
Co-head coach Fred Muhumuza has emphasized the importance of maintaining their form across both competitions.
“Vipers SC has a deep squad. To remain competitive, it’s crucial to fight on both fronts—the Uganda Cup and the League. That’s why we prioritize both competitions,” Muhumuza told Vipers Media.
Muhumuza also highlighted the unpredictable nature of cup games, recalling their hard-fought 2-1 victory over FUFA Regional League side Teso Progress Academy (TEPA) FC in the previous round.
“Cup matches are always tricky, tough, and competitive, especially against teams we don’t regularly face. Playing TEPA FC under heavy rains was particularly difficult,” he said.
On the other side, Mbarara City, coached by former Vipers tactician Livingstone Mbabazi, will be looking to cause an upset.
The Ankole Lions advanced to this stage after a grueling 5-3 penalty shootout victory over Junior Eagles, following a goalless draw in regulation time.
Mbarara City have had a mixed run in the Uganda Premier League’s second round, defeating Mbale Heroes but falling to BUL.
Muhumuza acknowledged the threat posed by Mbarara City, stating, “They are a well-coached team with a competitive squad, solid tactical organization, high energy levels, and strong individual talent.”
The two sides have already met this season in the league, with Vipers securing a 3-1 victory at Kakyeka Stadium, thanks to a brace from Allan Okello and a goal from Yunus Sentamu.
In team news, Vipers will be without the injured duo of Milton Karisa and Isaac Ogwang, though both players are reportedly making good progress in their recovery.
“Milton and Ogwang are recovering well, and the medical department is doing a tremendous job in helping them return to the team,” Muhumuza confirmed.
Last season, Vipers dominated Mbarara City with a 4-1 victory at St. Mary’s Stadium, courtesy of a Milton Karisa brace and goals from Karim Watambala and Abubakar Lawal.
However, with both teams eager to make their mark in the Uganda Cup, Thursday’s encounter promises to be a thrilling contest.
