Crested Cranes head coach Sheryl Botes has confirmed the team’s leadership structure ahead of Uganda’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 Qualifiers, naming Finland-based forward Viola Nambi as the new team captain.
Nambi, who plays for Aland United Women FC, will lead the team as they prepare to take on Ethiopia’s Lucy in the first round of qualifiers.
She will be assisted by in-form striker Fazila Ikwaput, currently playing for Gokulam Kerala WFC in India, while experienced goalkeeper Ruth Aturo, who features for Tanzanian side Tausi WFC, will serve as the second deputy captain.
The announcement comes just days before Uganda’s opening fixture against Ethiopia, set for Friday, February 21, 2025, at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo.
The return leg will be played in Addis Ababa on Wednesday, February 26, with the aggregate winner advancing to the next qualification round.
Speaking about the appointments, Coach Botes expressed confidence in the trio’s ability to lead the squad both on and off the pitch.
“Viola, Fazila, and Ruth bring a wealth of experience and leadership to the team. Their commitment and professionalism make them ideal choices to guide the team through this crucial qualification campaign,” Botes said.
Nambi, who has been a key figure for Aland United in Finland, expressed her pride in taking on the captaincy role.
“It’s an honor to captain the Crested Cranes. I am ready to give my all for the team, and I believe we have what it takes to make it to WAFCON 2026,” she said.
The Crested Cranes are eager to return to the continental stage after missing out on the 2024 tournament.
Their last appearance came in 2022 when they competed in Morocco but failed to progress past the group stage.
