Chelsea Set for Conference League Clash with Copenhagen, Avoid Fiorentina

Chelsea’s quest for European glory in the UEFA Conference League took a significant step forward on Friday as they were drawn against Copenhagen in the round of 16.

The draw, held in Nyon, Switzerland, also strategically separated the English giants from fellow favorites Fiorentina, ensuring a potential clash between the two powerhouses only in the final.

Having dominated the newly formatted 36-team league phase, winning all six of their matches, Chelsea secured the coveted top seed.

Their impressive run, achieved even with rotation of key players like star playmaker Cole Palmer, has positioned them as the team to beat in the competition.

The London club, with a history of eliminating Copenhagen from the Champions League round of 16, will travel to Denmark for the first leg on March 6th.

The return fixture at Stamford Bridge is scheduled for the following week, March 13th, promising an intense two-legged encounter.

Fiorentina, who have experienced heartbreak in the past two Conference League finals, were paired with Panathinaikos. This separation means that a highly anticipated Chelsea-Fiorentina showdown can only occur in the final, set to be held in Wroclaw, Poland, on May 28th.

Chelsea’s potential path to the final could also feature a trip to Poland, as a victory over Copenhagen would see them face either Legia Warsaw or Molde in the quarter-finals.

Copenhagen, who successfully navigated the knockout playoffs by eliminating Germany’s Heidenheim on Thursday, will be eager to upset the odds against the Premier League side.

Their victory over Heidenheim, highlighted by Jordan Larson’s opening goal, showcased their resilience and attacking prowess.

The absence of a French team in the league phase underscores the competitive nature of the Conference League, highlighting the diverse range of clubs vying for the title.

Spain’s sole representative, Real Betis, was drawn against Portugal’s second seed, Vitoria Guimaraes. The other pairings from Friday’s draw were: Jagiellonia Bialystok vs. Cercle Brugge, Celje vs. Lugano, Pafos vs. Djurgarden, and Borac Banja Luka vs. Rapid Vienna.
