Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has publicly expressed his disappointment and frustration following his side’s 2-2 draw against Everton at Goodison Park, accusing his players of lacking “respect” in key defensive areas, particularly when defending set-pieces.
The highly anticipated final visit to Goodison Park saw United struggle to assert their dominance, falling behind to a soft goal from an Everton corner.
Beto capitalized on a series of defensive lapses, firing a looping shot over goalkeeper Andre Onana, highlighting United’s vulnerability from dead-ball situations.
Amorim, speaking in his post-match press conference, did not hold back his criticism. “We lost a lot of balls without any pressure.
We have free men, sometimes we don’t respect the positioning, and anyone who watched a little bit of Everton in this field, they will be really good on second balls and the two goals are second balls, fighting in the air. That’s why you get disappointed,” he stated.
The manager’s primary concern centered on the lack of organization and awareness shown by his players when defending set-pieces, an area where Everton are known to be particularly dangerous.
He felt his team failed to adequately deal with the second balls and aerial challenges, leading directly to Beto’s opening goal.
“We didn’t play first half. We didn’t exist in the first half. Everything we did during the week, I think the free man was there, I think the space was there, I think we lose balls we cannot lose,” Amorim added, highlighting the team’s overall lack of composure and execution in the opening 45 minutes.
Despite managing to salvage a draw with two goals from set-pieces of their own, Amorim emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline and respecting tactical instructions.
He praised his players’ improved performance in the second half, attributing it to increased energy and quality.
“But it’s a good thing that in the second half they play in the same position with more energy, more quality and that makes the difference. I said no matter what, we are going to do what we did during the week but with a little bit more energy. I think you saw that it was not different in the position, it was different in the quality we play the game,” he explained.
The result leaves Manchester United with questions to answer, particularly regarding their defensive consistency.
The performance has sparked debate among fans and pundits, with many echoing Amorim’s concerns about the team’s lack of focus and organization.
The manager also addressed the decision to drop Alejandro Garnacho, stating it was “really important” for tactical reasons, though he didn’t elaborate. Furthermore, a Manchester United teenager confirmed a squad role, raising the possibility of a debut.
The match also saw the player ratings published, with one player receiving an “inspirational” 7/10, but four players receiving “unacceptable” 3/10s, highlighting the disparity in performance within the team.
Looking ahead, Amorim’s focus will undoubtedly be on addressing the defensive frailties and ensuring his players maintain the necessary level of concentration and discipline.
The manager also addressed rumours regarding free agent signings, most notably Paul Pogba, stating “We have” a stance, but not elaborating.
