Ugandan police are holding Omary Naima, a Tanzanian national, in connection with the death of Vipers SC’s Nigerian forward, Abubakar Lawal, who tragically died on Monday after falling from the third floor of Voice Mall Shopping Arcade in Bwebajja, along Entebbe Road.
Naima, believed to be the last person with Lawal before his death, is currently detained at Kajjansi Police Station in Wakiso District as investigations continue.
Authorities are also hunting for other potential suspects linked to the incident.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest and revealed that preliminary findings suggest Lawal’s death may not have been accidental.
“The crime scene findings indicate that there could have been a third person. This suggests that the victim (Lawal) could not have jumped to his death. As a result, further investigations have been launched,” Owoyesigyire said.
The police statement released on Monday evening provided more details about the events leading up to the tragedy.
Lawal arrived at Voice Mall in his car, registration number UBQ 695G, to visit Naima, who had been staying in room 416 since February 20, 2025.
According to Naima’s account, she left Lawal in the room preparing tea and went to a nearby game centre within the mall.
Moments later, around 8:00 AM, Lawal reportedly fell from the balcony. He was rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Police recovered several personal items belonging to Lawal, including two smartphones, a pair of open shoes, headsets, a training kit, and chargers, all packed in his black backpack.
Investigators are now reviewing CCTV footage and conducting in-depth interrogations to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
The arrest of Naima marks a significant step in the ongoing investigation, as authorities work to uncover whether foul play was involved.
Meanwhile, the football community remains in shock over the sudden loss of Lawal, with tributes pouring in for the talented forward.
