Newcastle United winger Jacob Murphy has turned down an approach from the Nigerian national team, opting to maintain his focus on his club career and potential future opportunities with England or the Republic of Ireland.

The decision, revealed by Craig Hope of the Daily Mail, comes despite significant interest from Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chelle, who was keen to secure the 29-year-old for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Murphy, who has enjoyed a stellar season at St. James’ Park, has been eligible to represent Nigeria through his father and the Republic of Ireland through his mother, in addition to his native England, where he has featured at the youth level.

His recent form, marked by five goals and nine assists across all competitions, caught the eye of Chelle, who made a direct approach to the Newcastle winger.

“Jacob Murphy will politely decline an approach from Nigeria to switch his international allegiance,” Hope reported, effectively ending speculation about a potential switch.

The Nigerian coaching staff had hoped to capitalize on Murphy’s impressive contributions to Newcastle’s attacking play, particularly his effective partnership with striker Alexander Isak.

Eddie Howe, Newcastle’s manager, has consistently praised Murphy’s impact, highlighting his crucial role in creating scoring opportunities.

“He’s been very, very important and probably more than people realize,” Howe stated, emphasizing Murphy’s crucial crossing ability that has significantly benefited Isak’s goal tally.

While the opportunity to represent Nigeria and potentially participate in the 2026 World Cup was enticing, Murphy’s decision indicates a desire to keep his options open for a possible call-up from either England or, more realistically, the Republic of Ireland.

This path would also provide the winger with the opportunity to compete in major international tournaments.

“That would give Murphy the chance to play at next year’s World Cup, but we understand he will not be joining the Nigeria squad any time soon,” Hope explained.

Murphy’s focus will now remain on his club duties with Newcastle United, where he has become an integral part of Howe’s squad. His consistent performances have solidified his position as a key player, contributing significantly to the team’s attacking prowess.
