Naomi Osaka has publicly apologized following her unexpected first-round loss to Camila Osorio at Indian Wells.
The four-time Grand Slam champion and 2018 Indian Wells winner was outplayed in straight sets, falling 6-4, 6-4 to the world No. 53.
Osaka, who had not competed since retiring from her Australian Open third-round match due to an abdominal injury, struggled to find her rhythm against the Colombian.
Despite being the heavy favorite, she was unable to impose her game, allowing Osorio to make history as the first Colombian to defeat a former world No. 1.
Following the match, Osaka took to Threads to express her frustration, writing: “Worst match I’ve ever played in my life. Wow, I’m so sorry to everyone who watched that.”
However, she struck a more measured tone in her post-match press conference, acknowledging her struggles while remaining hopeful about her form.
“There were certain things that felt extremely off because I could only start to practice serving after a certain amount of time,” she explained. “I think given the situation, it wasn’t that terrible. It just feels like a little bump in the road.”
Osorio, meanwhile, was elated with the victory and shared her excitement during an on-court interview.
“It’s crazy for me, it’s a dream come true. I really wanted to play on this court. I was really excited and looking forward to playing a champion like Naomi, so I can’t believe I won,” she said.
The 22-year-old will now face Denmark’s Clara Tauson in the second round as she looks to build on her stunning upset.
