Three Ugandan goalkeepers were in action on matchday 21 of the Betway Premiership in South Africa on Wednesday.
Former Uganda Cranes captain Denis Onyango was between the posts for Mamelodi Sundowns against his successor Isma Watenga, as Sundowns and Golden Arrows shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
Meanwhile, Salim Jamal Magoola enjoyed a victorious outing, with Richards Bay securing a 2-1 win over Sekhukhune.
In the clash between Onyango and Watenga at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Durban, Keenan Phillips put Golden Arrows ahead in the 31st minute.
However, the lead was short-lived, as Lucas Ribeiro equalized for Sundowns at the stroke of halftime, converting a penalty in the 44th minute.
Elsewhere, in the match involving Magoola, Richards Bay conceded early to Chibuike Ohizu in the 8th minute, but they bounced back in the second half.
Fezile Gcaba equalized for Richards Bay in the 55th minute. Thabiso Kutumela scored in the 93rd minute, giving Richards Bay a 2-1 victory at King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban.
Onyango’s Sundowns extended their lead at the top of the table, taking their tally to 55 points with nine games remaining, as they continue their march toward an eighth consecutive PSL title.
This would be their 18th league crown, marking another milestone for Onyango as he continues to solidify his legacy as the most decorated player in the history of the PSL.
Sundowns will return home to Lucas Masterpiece Moripe Stadium in Pretoria on Tuesday, March 11, to face sixth-placed AmaZulu.
While Onyango celebrates top spot, his compatriots Watenga and Magoola are struggling in the lower half of the table.
Watenga’s Golden Arrows and Magoola’s Richards Bay are both on 21 points, sitting 11th and 12th, respectively, separated only by goal difference (-6 and -5).
The battle for survival continues, with both Watenga and Magoola’s teams hoping to avoid relegation.
Next week, Richards Bay will visit fellow strugglers Magesi at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Tuesday, while Golden Arrows will face Polokwane at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium the following day.
