UPL Preview: NEC’s Title Aspirations Face Wakiso’s Desperation

The battle for survival meets the race for the title as Wakiso Giants host NEC in a crucial Uganda Premier League clash at Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium on Friday.

Second-placed NEC arrive in Wakiso knowing that only a win will keep them within touching distance of table leaders Vipers, who extended their lead to six points with a narrow 1-0 victory over Police FC on Thursday.

Hussein Mbalangu’s side, currently on 40 points, will be banking on their recent momentum after a 2-0 win over Lugazi, while also drawing confidence from their dominant 2-0 victory over Wakiso Giants in the first round.

“We’re prepared to face Wakiso Giants and aware of the challenges that come with it,” Mbalangu said. “Our goal is to maintain our winning streak and narrow the gap at the top.”

For Wakiso Giants, the reality is grim. Winless in 15 league games and sitting seven points adrift of safety, anything less than victory will further sink Steven Bengo’s side into crisis mode.

Their 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Express last week has only intensified the pressure.

“We’re well aware of our precarious situation and are desperate to win games,” Bengo admitted. “We’ve prepared diligently to secure maximum points on Friday.”

However, Wakiso’s squad remains depleted, with Herbert Asiimwe, Isaac Mtengwa, and Alex Komakech still sidelined due to injury.

Striker Samuel Nsubuga is unavailable due to family commitments, though new signing Godfrey Omoki is in contention to make his debut.

NEC will welcome back goalkeeper Hannington Sebwalunyo, who missed the last game due to his wedding, but doubts linger over Enock Ssebagala and Ibrahim Thembo, both nursing injuries.

NEC will be seeking back-to-back victories to close the gap on Vipers to within three points. To achieve this, the Diehards will need to replicate their first-round performance, where they punished Wakiso Giants’ wastefulness to secure a 2-0 win at Lugogo.

With desperation fueling the hosts and ambition driving the visitors, Friday’s showdown at Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium promises to be a fierce contest.

Kickoff is set for 4pm.
