Denis Omedi and Hakim Kiwanuka were at the heart of the action as APR and Rayon Sports battled to a goalless draw in a highly anticipated Rwanda Premier League clash at Amahoro Stadium on Sunday.
Both Ugandan forwards, who have earned call-ups to the Uganda Cranes squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, put in strong performances in a tense derby that saw both teams fight for control without finding a breakthrough.
Omedi, leading APR’s attack, was a constant threat with his movement and link-up play.
In the 43rd minute, he came close to breaking the deadlock when he latched onto a pass from Bosco Ruboneka, only for his shot to flash across the goal and go out for a goal kick.
His presence in the final third kept Rayon’s defence on high alert, drawing fouls and winning crucial duels.
His impact was further highlighted when he won a free kick in the 49th minute after being brought down by Souleymane Daffe, who was booked for the challenge.
On the other side, Kiwanuka was lively for APR before being substituted in the second half.
In the 19th minute, he forced a brilliant save from Rayon’s goalkeeper, Khadime Ndiaye, with a well-taken effort.
His ability to stretch the defence and create space for his teammates made him a key figure in APR’s attacking movements before he was replaced in the 58th minute as part of a tactical switch by coach Darko Novic.
Despite both teams pushing for a winner in the closing stages, neither side could break the deadlock. Rayon Sports held on to remain at the top of the league table with 43 points, while APR stayed close behind in second place with 41.
