David Brekalo Aspires to Lead Slovenia to the 2026 FIFA World Cup

David Brekalo, a central defender for Orlando City SC, has his sights set on a historic goal: guiding Slovenia to their first FIFA World Cup since 2010.

As the team prepares for UEFA qualifiers in Group B against Kosovo, Sweden, and Switzerland, Brekalo shares his optimism and determination to make his mark on the global stage.

Reflecting on Slovenia’s previous World Cup glory, Brekalo recalled the unforgettable moment in 2009 when his nation secured their place in South Africa.

“It’s these kinds of moments that you work for on the field,” he stated, underscoring the pride and unity that football brings to his country.

Brekalo’s international ambitions coincide with his flourishing club career in Major League Soccer (MLS), where he plays for Orlando City SC.

Now in his second season, he praised the league’s competitiveness and rapid growth, while also expressing excitement about the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup 2025, which will see Orlando host six matches.

Speaking about Slovenia’s chances in the World Cup qualifiers, Brekalo emphasized the team’s resilience and readiness, noting their strong performance at UEFA EURO 2024, where they reached the knockout stage.

“We know our strength, and we won’t give up until somebody takes the points away from us,” he declared.

Brekalo also highlighted the importance of unity and preparation for Slovenia’s campaign, while acknowledging the challenges ahead.

“Everyone needs to be in good form and ready to give 100% effort,” he said. With the support of Slovenian fans and encouragement from NBA superstar Luka Doncic, Brekalo is driven to create new memories that will inspire his nation.
