The Joe Kigozi Academy (JKA) has announced the launch of Uganda’s inaugural Autism Awareness Run, set to take place on April 5, 2025, at Acres of Fun Preschool in Muyenga, Kampala.
This groundbreaking event aims to bridge gaps in understanding and support for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) while advocating for a more inclusive society.
Joe Kigozi, the CEO and Founder of JKA, emphasized the importance of the initiative, highlighting the lack of resources and support for individuals with autism in Uganda.
“Currently, resources and support for individuals with autism in Uganda are limited, making this run a vital initiative,” he said.
He reiterated JKA’s commitment to improving the lives of young people through sports and using this platform to create meaningful social impact.
The Autism Awareness Run will not only serve as an advocacy tool but also raise funds for crucial initiatives, including therapeutic programs, educational resources, community outreach, and family support.
The proceeds will help provide access to therapies that improve the quality of life for individuals with autism, support schools and families with tools to better understand ASD, and create inclusive environments to reduce stigma.
The event has garnered key partnerships, with Next Media coming on board as the main media sponsor. Desire Derekford Mugumisa, representing Next Media, expressed the organization’s dedication to championing initiatives that inspire social change, stating that raising awareness about autism aligns with their commitment to impactful storytelling.
Dorothy Nambi, the Executive Director of the Autism Society of Uganda, underscored the significance of such initiatives in addressing the challenges faced by those on the autism spectrum.
“Autism is a developmental condition impacting communication, behavior, and social interaction, and remains misunderstood by many in Uganda,” she noted.
According to the World Health Organization, autism affects approximately 1 in 100 children globally.
However, in Uganda, many families still struggle with barriers to accessing diagnosis and therapy, making awareness campaigns like this run essential in fostering change and providing much-needed support.
JKA is calling upon individuals, corporate partners, and organizations to support the Autism Awareness Run through financial contributions, in-kind donations, volunteer assistance, or promotional support.
“By partnering with us, you will not only be demonstrating corporate social responsibility but also enhancing brand visibility and strengthening community connections,” Kigozi added.
With a focus on awareness, acceptance, and action, the Autism Awareness Run is set to be a landmark event in Uganda’s efforts toward inclusivity and support for individuals with autism.
