Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put has outlined his tactical approach for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, acknowledging the challenges of limited preparation time while maintaining confidence in his squad.
With Uganda set to face Mozambique on March 20, at Cairo International Stadium and later host Guinea at Namboole Stadium on March 25, Put stressed the importance of a game-by-game focus, highlighting the unpredictability of African football.
“You cannot underestimate any African team. In World Cup qualifiers, opportunities are scarce, so we must be well-prepared. Our players understand that these chances are rare in their careers,” Put remarked.
However, Uganda’s preparation window is notably tight. With some foreign-based players joining camp on 17th March and training commencing just a day later, Put admitted that the situation is far from ideal but insisted that the team must adapt.
“Unfortunately, we have a short preparation period. Some players will arrive only two days before the game, which is challenging. But we will not make excuses. We will do our best to achieve good results,” he added.
Despite the constraints, Put remains steadfast in his approach, particularly regarding Uganda’s three home matches against Guinea, Mozambique, and Somalia.
Rather than focusing on points calculations, he is placing emphasis on performance.
“I do not like to overthink. We performed well away in the AFCON qualifiers, and we should maintain that level. At home, we need to make a difference. The key is to focus on our game rather than stressing over numbers.”
With Uganda aiming for its first-ever World Cup appearance, Put urged his players to seize the moment.
“Every game is crucial. You do not get many chances to qualify for a World Cup in your career. I have been close before, and when you are close, you want more. Uganda must push forward and stay focused,” he said.
Put also called on Ugandan fans to rally behind the team, recognizing their role in motivating the players.
“Our strength comes from mentality and unity. Fans play a significant role in this. Ugandans love football, and their support gives us the energy we need,” he noted.
With six points already secured, Uganda will look to maximize its opportunities and take a big step towards making history by qualifying for the World Cup for the first time ever.
