The Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, will once again be the centre of Uganda’s athletics scene as the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) hosts the Second National Trials this Saturday, March 15, 2025.
The event will feature a packed competition schedule from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with athletes competing across a range of track and field disciplines.
The trials come just two weeks after the first national event at Namboole since its renovation, which saw a strong turnout of 286 athletes from Uganda, and across the East African region.
With the Paris 2024 Olympic cycle completed, the trials are expected to be a crucial stepping stone for athletes targeting qualification for upcoming international championships, including the 2025 World Athletics Championships and the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The competition will open with the javelin throw and shot put at 9:00 AM, followed by the 10,000m men’s race and long jump women’s event at 9:30 AM.
The schedule includes sprint events like the 100m, 200m, and 400m, middle-distance races such as the 800m and 1500m, and endurance events like the 5000m and 10,000m.
The trials will conclude with the relay races, with the 4x100m and 4x400m mixed relays promising an exciting finish to the competition.
With Uganda celebrating 100 years of athletics, these trials are not just about individual qualification but also about identifying new talent that could represent the country on the global stage.
Namboole’s state-of-the-art tartan track, which has already received praise from top athletes, is expected to provide the perfect conditions for strong performances.
The event is open to athletes aged 16 and above, and registration remains a key requirement.
