Mbale Heroes’ struggles in the Uganda Premier League have reached a critical point, and Thursday’s clash against Lugazi at Mbale Municipal Stadium could determine the trajectory of their survival fight.
Without a win in 2025, the bottom-placed side is in dire need of a turnaround. New head coach Baker Mbowa has yet to taste victory after four games in charge, and his team’s recent form offers little encouragement.
Mbale Heroes have picked up just five points in their last ten matches, with their last win coming against Mbarara City.
Since then, they have managed only two draws, against Police and UPDF, and have suffered a string of defeats that have left them languishing at the foot of the table with just ten points.
A victory on Thursday would lift them above Soltilo Bright Stars into 15th place, offering a glimmer of hope in an otherwise bleak campaign.
Lugazi, on the other hand, have adapted well to life in the top flight and currently sit 11th with 23 points.
Their recent 1-0 win over Express underlined their ability to challenge even the league’s more established teams. With five wins and eight draws this season, they have shown resilience, making them favourites heading into this clash.
However, history favours Mbale Heroes in this fixture. The two sides met in the Big League last season, with Mbale Heroes claiming a 2-1 victory in one encounter and holding Lugazi to a 1-1 draw in another.
When they faced off in the first round of the UPL this season, they shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
Team selection will play a crucial role in the outcome of this match. Mbale Heroes will be without key players Delton Oyo, Gabriel Matata, Herbert Kibirango, and Abel Muwanguzi due to injuries.
For Lugazi, Alvin Burungi and Akiram Massa are sidelined, while George William Oluka, Norman Lumumba, and Basham Mukhwana are unavailable due to personal reasons.
With time running out and the threat of relegation looming large, Mbale Heroes must rise to the occasion and secure three points at home.
Can they finally break their winless spell, or will Lugazi continue their solid campaign by piling more misery on the Surgeons? All eyes will be on Mbale as the fight for survival intensifies.
