UPL: Lugazi, Police Shine As Express and Mbale Heroes Falter

Lugazi and Police emerged victorious in their respective Uganda Premier League encounters on Thursday, leaving Express and Mbale Heroes reeling from home defeats.

Police stunned Express 2-1 under the Nakivubo floodlights to end a nine-game winless streak.

After a goalless first half, Brian Obedi broke the deadlock in the 49th minute with a composed finish after being set up by Denis Kalanzi.

Reagan Male doubled the lead in the 68th minute, capitalising on another Kalanzi assist to fire past Express goalkeeper Emmanuel Kalyowa.

The Red Eagles pulled one back late in the game through substitute Conrad Ssenjogera, but Police held on for a crucial win that moves them to 12th place on 23 points.

Express, meanwhile, stay seventh with 28 points and must regroup before their next match against NEC on March 27.

In Mbale, Lugazi piled more misery on bottom-placed Mbale Heroes with a commanding 3-1 win at Mbale City Stadium.

The visitors wasted no time, scoring in the third minute through Sam Ssemugugu after a well-threaded pass from Derrick Mwanje.

New signing Hussein Ssenoga doubled Lugazi’s advantage in the 31st minute with a brilliantly executed free kick, but heavy rain delayed the second half.

Mbale Heroes found a glimmer of hope in the 57th minute when Robert Eseru headed home to make it 2-1. However, Sharif Ssaka sealed the win for Lugazi with an instinctive finish in the 78th minute.

The result lifts Lugazi to ninth place with 26 points, while Mbale Heroes remain rooted to the bottom with just 10 points.
