Lozano Dreams of World Cup Glory on Home Soil

Mexican winger Hirving “Chucky” Lozano has expressed his excitement and hopes for the FIFA World Cup 2026™, which will be co-hosted by his homeland, Canada, and the United States.

In an exclusive interview with FIFA, the 29-year-old, currently playing for MLS expansion team San Diego, reminisced about his World Cup experiences and shared his aspirations to represent Mexico in front of his compatriots.

Lozano, who famously scored the winning goal against reigning champions Germany in the 2018 World Cup, described the prospect of playing in 2026 as “incredible.”

“It would mean the world to me to play in front of my compatriots in my country,” he stated. “Everything’s set for it to be a really special World Cup, which is exactly how it’ll turn out. I hope God gives me the opportunity to play. It would be incredible for me. It’s my dream to compete in the World Cup on home soil.”

Reflecting on his past World Cup memories, Lozano cited the 2010 tournament in South Africa as a source of inspiration, particularly Mexico’s victory over France.

However, it was his debut goal against Germany in 2018 that stands out as his most vivid memory. “Getting the better of the holders was such a special moment and one that I’ll remember for the rest of my life because no-one can take those memories away from you,” he said. “I think every Mexican remembers where they were that day.”

Lozano also highlighted the significance of Mexico hosting the World Cup for a third time, emphasizing the potential positive impact on the nation.

“It’s hugely important and such a good thing for our country and for Mexican football as a whole,” he explained. “It’s a global celebration, and it’s simply magnificent.”

He believes the tournament will raise the standard of Mexican football and attract a large number of visitors, boosting the country’s profile.

While Lozano hasn’t featured for the national team since Javier Aguirre’s return as coach last June, his desire to represent his country at the World Cup remains strong.

He also expressed his support for his boyhood club, CF Pachuca, as they prepare to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™.

“It was at Pachuca that I got my first taste of top-flight football,” Lozano said. “I think it’s important for them to be taking part in the Club World Cup, plus there are so many Mexicans in the United States who’ll get right behind the team, and that’ll be key.”
