The 2025 Legends Marathon is set to take place on April 13th at Legends Rugby Grounds, bringing together retired sports icons and their supporters to celebrate and provide assistance to Uganda’s sporting legends after their active careers.
This initiative arrives at a crucial moment, evidenced by a distressing video shared on social media of former Uganda Cranes winger Obadia Semakula, who appeared to be experiencing a deterioration in his mental well-being.
The 1980s football star was admitted to Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital on Wednesday to receive further care.
Such struggles emphasize the importance of the Legends Marathon, which aims to reconnect, honor, and empower former athletes.
Launched today under the banner “Run for Your Legend,” this year’s event is expected to draw over 500 runners from various sports.
Numerous sports legends have voiced their support for the initiative, highlighting the challenges they face following retirement, including issues related to mental health.
“When you are still a legend, people celebrate you; even the Head of State recognizes you. But once you retire, no one cares,” said Moses Kipsiro, former Commonwealth Champion.
This year’s marathon introduces a new 10km race, alongside the established 5km, 21km, and 42km options, to encourage broader participation and increase its impact.
The Legends Marathon remains committed to ensuring that Uganda’s sporting heroes are recognized, celebrated, and supported long after their playing days are over.
