Uganda Cranes captain Khalid Aucho has called for patience and support from fans and the media, cautioning against harsh criticism that could negatively impact the younger players in the squad.
His plea comes in the wake of intense backlash directed at goalkeeper Ismail Watenga, whose errors proved costly in Uganda’s 3-1 defeat to Mozambique.
Aucho emphasized that while mistakes happen in football, young players must be protected and encouraged rather than torn down.
“Some of the words from fans and the media can really affect players, especially the younger ones. We must be mindful of that,” he said. “Our young players are the future. They took us to AFCON, and so we must continue to uplift and motivate them, even in tough times. I call upon the nation and the media to support them.”
The Uganda Cranes captain also took personal responsibility for the team’s struggles, insisting that as the leader on the pitch, he should be the one to face criticism.
“As captain, I am responsible for the mistakes my team makes. If you must criticize, direct it at me, not the young players. They need encouragement, not blame,” Aucho stated.
With Uganda set to take on Guinea tomorrow at Mandela National Stadium, Aucho urged fans to turn up in large numbers to back the team.
“Let’s fill Namboole and push the boys forward. We shall not disappoint,” he assured.
Uganda Cranes will be hoping for a strong response after their setback against Mozambique, as they aim to keep their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes alive.
