Former professional footballer Joey Barton, 42, has been convicted of assault by beating after a court found him guilty of pushing his wife, Georgia Barton, 38, to the ground and kicking her in the head.
The incident occurred during a drunken altercation at their family home in Kew, south-west London, in June 2021.
The verdict was delivered at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, where details of the disturbing incident were revealed.
The court heard that Barton, who previously played for prominent clubs such as Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers (QPR), had been drinking with his wife and two other couples when the argument erupted. The couple’s children were reportedly asleep upstairs during the incident.
The catalyst for the altercation was Barton’s aggressive behavior, which included threats to fight his wife’s brother and father.
This led to a physical confrontation in which he pushed Georgia Barton to the floor and subsequently kicked her in the head.
At the time of the assault, Joey Barton was managing Bristol Rovers. The court has now sentenced him to a 12-week suspended prison sentence.
A spokesperson for the court stated, “Mr. Barton has been found guilty of a single charge of assault by beating following an incident at his home in June 2021.”
This conviction adds to Barton’s troubled history, which has been marked by several controversies both on and off the football field.
He now also faces a new trial regarding a seperate assault allegation.
