Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo will be part of history at the 2025 London Marathon, which is set to break the world record for the largest-ever marathon field.
More than 56,000 runners are expected to complete the iconic 26.2-mile race on April 27, surpassing the current record of 55,646 finishers set by the New York Marathon in 2023.
Kiplimo, the reigning World Half Marathon champion, joins a star-studded lineup in a race that has attracted unprecedented interest.
More than 840,000 people applied for a spot in this year’s event, far exceeding last year’s record of 578,304 applicants.
“The 45th edition is a landmark year for us, and it would be wonderful to mark that by becoming the biggest marathon ever staged anywhere in the world,” said Hugh Brasher, CEO of London Marathon Events.
The men’s elite field will also feature Kenyan legend Eliud Kipchoge, who returns to London for the first time since 2020, along with Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele and Valencia Marathon champion Alexander Mutiso Munyao.
In the women’s race, world record holder Ruth Chepngetich, Olympic champion Sifan Hassan, and silver medallist Tigst Assefa will battle for victory.
Kiplimo’s participation adds further intrigue, as the Ugandan long-distance star will take on his first marathon in a year when the event itself is poised to make history.
With thousands set to run through the streets of London in what could be the largest marathon ever staged, the stage is set for an unforgettable race.
